The Practice of Lent
Like advent encourages believers to meditate on Jesus as the coming Messiah each Christmas, Lent prepares believers to commemorate Good Friday and celebrate Easter.
Lent is a 40-day sacred remembering and reflection period leading up the Easter. During this time, Christians around the globe remember the sacrifice of Jesus and think about one's surrender to God and His Kingdom. Ash Wednesday serves as the first day of Lent. You may have seen someone with the mark of the ashes on their forehead after attending a local Ash Wednesday gathering. The ashes symbolize one's repentance and death to self in following Christ.
During this significant 40-day period, many believers read a daily reflection or lenten devotional. Below are links to online resources and easy-to-order devotional options.
Lent Info & Readings
• Lenten Devotional Online - Sponsored by Gospel in Life, Spiritual Resources from Tim Keller
Lenten Books for Devotional
• Journey to the Cross by Paul David Tripp
• Small Surrenders by Emilie Griffin
• Bread and Wine by C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Philip Yancey and others
In addition to devotional reading, many Christians will fast from a routine or a comfort. For example, many refrain from desserts or coffee. This chosen restraint helps draw attention to the greater surrender of Jesus to become human, teach us of the Father, die for our sins, and rise again (Philippians 2).
We believe Lent can be a spiritual discipline to deepen one's connection with Jesus in preparation for resurrection Sunday. If you have never adopted this practice, we encourage you to try it this year. There is only greater intimacy with Jesus, His heart, and His mission to gain.
We would love to hear about your lenten experience this year. Plus, if you would like further information, please contact GROW Pastor, Shawn Stutz, at shawn@shorelineknox.com.
